Learning and developing new techniques especially defense techniques is always the key to success. So, if you aim not to survive but to win, learning this basic technique of boxing is essential.

Slipping a Punch

It won’t be wrong if I say Boxing is all about punches, either you get one or give one. To avoid being punched, you must master the art of slipping. Here I share some useful tips to make the slipping technique easy as a piece of cake for you. It is important to acknowledge that even the greatest boxer can lose a fight, if he fails to make the right move at the right time. Hence, you must go through some of the strategies I have discussed for the best slipping tactics.

Technique #1

Improve your footwork

Slipping tactics basically engage your foot and hips while keeping your whole body in balance. With an aim for perfection of your slipping tactics, you must have a strong grip on your footwork.

o Be ready in your stance and feel relaxed.

o Your shoulder should be below the rope.

o Now step ahead, using only the toes.

o Move your right foot then the left one.

o Keep on shifting from one foot to the other.

o Practice using your lead foot first.

Technique #2

Head position is important!

Skipping a punch can be easy if your head positions in a dodging position with reference to your opponent. Never provide your opponent with obvious bait by keeping your head in the center. Slips can be made easily and perfectly when your head is tilted off to your either side already. Disguise your head either to the left or to the right in front of your opponent so that you may avoid a crushing blow on the center of your head. Tips for the right head position:

o Do not wait for your opponent to blow a punch. Always be ready for bobbing the punch.

o Practice the dodging technique in combinations of other strategies.

o Do not slip too much to either side. It will make you lose your chance for a counterattack.

o Be aware of the punches blown non-linear. Although, most of the boxers throw straight punches but some may not follow the trend and blow a straight punch. No doubt, a straight punch is more difficult to dodge.

Technique #3

Make your opponent vulnerable!

You must avail of your payback time. When you slip make your opponent extend more so that you get a chance to punch back. Thus, you can position your opponent in a vulnerable condition to you. By slipping you may lose your balance and he will lose his stance while extending to hit you. However, you are still at luck as more the exposure of the opponent's body more is the chance for throwing a punch. Try the trick to turn the tables in your favor.

Technique #4

Wait for the right moment!

Keep your body position constant until you get an instinct that your opponent is going to throw his gloves. This is your time to bob to the either side of your opponent’s blow.  Tips for being patient for the right moment:

o Use your quick instincts to anticipate your opponent’s move.

o Do not dodge unnecessarily, it would weaken your boxing stance.

o Move your upper trunk laterally.

o Create a slight bend with your knees.

o Use your hips as a pivot to assist your upper body move laterally and simultaneously bending the knees.

Technique #5

Dodge swiftly without pausing!

While dodging and punching, make continuous slight movements. Like throwing some blows or jabbing. Keep your body on the go, and keep bouncing. Pressurize your opponent to throw a blow, try to learn his movements, and plan a counter-attack strategy. Tips for jerking:

o Throw slight continuous blows.

o Jerk your head forwards and backwards, confusing your opponent.

o Keep your head jerking. Make your opponent feel like you are slipping and be fully prepared to dodge a blow from his side.

o Create a disguised strategy with your body movements.

o Keep dragging your foot back and forth.

o Jerk your head from side to side.

o Swirl your torso.

Technique #6

Synchronizing your movements with your opponent is a must!

o The timing of your slip should be in accordance with the timing of your rival’s punch.

o Do not react instantly and hesitantly.

o Be fast but only when necessary.

o At first, block his punch then estimate his punch to match the timing of your slip.

Technique #7

Punching back helps!

In a game, it's not all about defending yourself but throwing an attack is necessary to keep your opponent in rhythm to your movements and to predict his movements as well. Punching back gives you a chance to disguise your head movements from your opponent, and reduces the chances of getting hit.

Technique #8

Increase your agility!

Being quick and spryness in your actions is necessary for defense and offense. Tips for increasing agility:

o Try to run as much as you can in a limited period.

o Keep your reflexes alert.

o Use the ladder to perform agility exercises, hop with one leg on the ladder.

o Then use both legs in an alternating manner.

o Jump ropes for at least 15 minutes without taking breaks.
