Finding The Appropriate Place For Hanging The Bag

Once you buy a punching bag, you would have to find a perfect place for it to hang. Look for an open space for your training. A garage or a basement would be the best option where you would find an open area. Keep in mind that your work area must provide 360-degree contact with the heavy bag.

Things to consider while hanging the bag

For appropriate hanging of the punching bag, you need to consider a few things:

  1. Weight of the filled punching bag
  2. The type of ceiling where you want to fix the heavy bag

There are several ways to install a heavy bag in your home. You can choose to hang it directly to the ceiling or attach it with specially designed supports. If you do not want to hang it free stand mounts are also available for punching bags.

Weight Of The Punching Bag

It is essential to have prior knowledge about the mass of the heavy bag before hanging it. Heavy bags are available in various weights, but a general home punching bag would weigh around 30 to 45 kgs. The weight also varies depending upon the company and the model. Professional punching bags the ones used at the gym would weigh around 90 kgs. Hitting the boxing bag with a force creates a large impact due to the punch and the weight of the bag itself. Moreover, the boxing bag would swing causing a centrifugal force. The resultant force may be of more magnitude than the weight of the bag itself, so you need to implant the bag with a 200 pounds support.

Proper Ways To Hang A Punching Bag

Among all the known ways to hang a bag, the four best methods are using a support beam, hanging with a ceiling mount, installing it using a wall mount, and hanging it using a freestanding heavy bag stand.

1. Using a Support Beam

Using a support beam to hang a heavy bag is the most preferred method for the installation of a bag. Make sure to opt for the strongest support and choose a location that will provide you with complete access to the heavy bag. Keep these tools ready before installment:

  2. Attach the chains to the heavy bag at one end and to the S-hook on the other end.
  3. Insert the S-hook into the eyebolt.

Try a few kicks and hits to check the integrity and precise hanging of the heavy bag.

2. Hanging With a Ceiling Mount

Ceiling mounts are installed on beams or joists. A ceiling mount is best attached to the region where the joist and the beam intersect. Prepare the following equipment prior to hanging:

  1. Drill machine
  2. Marker/Pointer
  3. Screwdriver
  4. Wrench
  5. Bag and chains
  6. Mount
  7. Nuts and bolts

Steps of Installation

  1. Mark the place on the ceiling where the bolts would go with the help of a marker.
  2. Drill through the marked points in the ceiling.
  3. Put the mount in the ceiling using a wrench.
  4. Join the chains to the bag and then attach with S-hook.
  5. Hang the bag on the mount with the hooks.

3. Hanging With a Wall Mount

Using a mounted wall is an alternative to attaching the bag to the ceiling. All the hardware would be available with the mount when you buy one. Prepare these tools prior to hanging the bag:

  1. Drill machine
  2. Marker/Pointer
  3. Screwdriver
  4. Wrench
  5. Bag and chains
  6. Mount
  7. Nuts and bolts

Steps of Installation

  1. Mark the place on the ceiling where the bolts would go with the help of a marker.
  2. Drill through the marked points in the ceiling.
  3. Attach the mount on the wall and tighten the bolts.
  4. Join the chains to the bag and then attach with S-hook.
  5. Hang the bag on the mount with the hooks.
  6. Using a Stand.

If you do not want to put holes on the ceiling or the wall, then go for a boxing stand. Boxing stand is a good option but not reliable as stands are not so stable. The stand would move, swindle, or tip over due to the impact of strikes.
